Finding Light (or Virtual Cooking Classes) During COVID-19

COVID-19 has no doubt changed the lives of billions of people across the globe. In the span of just a few months, people have seen immense reversals of fortune. Never, in most people’s lives would they ever be prepared for such a bizarre and historic event. While the virus may have brought the world closer together, as we bond over a collective suffering, many people have been physically distant from those that love and inspire them the most. Whether we were introverts or not, we’ve been forced into isolated “quaran-teams” and whether we were germaphobes or not, we’re all now accustomed to facemasks and the always pungent odor of hand sanitizer. It’s been an uphill battle, to say the least, to find some light in all this darkness, UNTIL… we remembered the warm hug of a bowl of bucatini all’amatriciana, the comfort of a flaky and buttery Southern-style biscuit, or the simple elegance of a delicate strawberry galette. We, at Liliahna, believe in the power of food to transform - to transform special days into lifelong memories and the occasional cloudy day into one full of light.

To bring you this light during these socially-distanced times, we have been conducting a series of virtual cooking classes! For the past three months, we have been sampling flavors from around the world, from Italy to France to Peru to the American South, all under the instruction of Chef Brendon. It’s not just the enticing menus, but the advice and tips Chef Brendon shares, that make the class all the more worthwhile.

Like the cookware or knives Chef’s using? Just ask him in the chat and he can recommend some brands.

Your eyes tearing up while cutting a big onion? Well Chef has learned that first putting them in the freezer has helped to reduce tears.

During class, Chef Brendon pulls from his years of culinary knowledge to bring you an entertaining, informative, and interactive experience.

We have been hosting Facebook live streams which are open for the public to attend as well as many private events for family reunions, birthday parties, and other events that may have been rescheduled or cancelled due to COVID-19.

Over the millennia of human history, the one thing that has always remained true is the resilience and adaptability of the human race. While we may find ourselves in uncertain and unprecedented times, we must always seek light no matter how dark it may get. Personally, Chef Brendon’s virtual cooking classes have been a source of light for me during sometimes mundane and challenging quarantine days. Being able to come together with friends and family to share in a laugh, good food, and a cocktail or two is the perfect way to unwind, enjoy, and remind yourself of the beauty in life’s simple pleasures. Food helps too.
